2022: Another Big Year For MBR!

As far as years go, 2022 has quite possibly been our biggest one yet. Like many other small businesses, we’ve experienced our fair share of challenges… but we’ve had a few massive wins, too!

So, as we approach the pointy end of the year, let’s take a brief look back on some of the highlights…

January: Change in Management

To start the year, we said goodbye to MBR’s long-time Managing Director, Hilary Dold as she headed off on a new adventure. Then on January 31st, we officially welcomed in our new managing director, Rory Crundall.

February: Floods

Like much of SEQ, flooding was the main theme for February (and March!). Fortunately, we made it through the 2022 floods, including around 1m of rain in a 6-day period. This experience inspired us to put together some flood landscaping tips to help our customers get ready for any future wild weather.

March: Recovery

Following the floods, we experienced higher than normal demand for crushed concrete to help support the clean up and recovery process. It was a busy month, but we did our best to keep up with orders and catch up on the crushing in between deliveries. As an added bonus, the rainy weather made for a great natural dust suppressant!

April: Big Projects

We had another busy month delivering large volumes of product. Asha Newport, Stockland’s new boutique townhomes in the Newport Waterside community, required a large quantity of our CBR15 to form a solid foundation for the project.

May: Welcoming Darryl

May was a huge month, with our New Operations Manager, Darryl, joining the team at MBR. Darryl brought a wealth of experience, having worked in mining and quarry management, as well as on the technical side of crushing machinery.

June: Special Visitors, Aspire & UpgradesRory chats with Luke Howarth at Moreton Bay Recycling.

A very busy June kicked off with a visit from our local MP, Hon. Luke Howarth! We filled Luke in on the concrete recycling process and how we’re contributing to the circular economy. This month, we also officially joined the Aspire marketplace to better connect with other businesses in the circular economy.

Finally, we shared about some of the strange things we’ve found in the concrete recycling pile. As part of this, we announced some new upgrades to the yard, including mounting cameras that capture loads (and number plates) as trucks come in. This is now helping us automate our load inspection processes, follow up on any materials we don’t allow, keep equipment running smoothly, and manufacture top quality products for reuse.

July: 99.9% Recycle Rate Commitment

We were thrilled to announce our 99.9% recycle rate commitment — with our team aiming to recycle 99.9% of the waste that comes into our yard. And as of early December 2022, we’re happy to report that we’ve met or exceeded this target every single month.

August: New Concrete Skip Hire ServiceAn infographic showing concrete bin hires sizes, including 2m, 3m, 4m, and 10m.

To make it easier for customers to recycle their concrete, we announced our new partnership with Jumbo Skip Bins. Customers can now hire a concrete bin directly through Moreton Bay Recycling — which is then supplied, delivered, and collected by Jumbo.

In other news, Moreton Bay Recycling was announced as a finalist for the Moreton Bay Business & Innovation Award for Environment & Sustainability Excellence!

September: Getting the Job Done

September was a very big month for crushing concrete and delivering our recycled products throughout the region! In particular, we provided a large volume of drainage material to the new Big Fish Caboolture Retail Precinct, which will include Bunnings, Coles, Petstock, Caltex, and others.

October: Sustainability Award & MoreA picture from the manufacturing networking event at Moreton Bay Recycling, with a rainbow over the yard.

October was (quite possibly) our biggest month of 2022!

Firstly, we highlighted tradie and small business mental health issues for World Mental Health Day (October 10). And some of our amazing team members attended the Walk for Awareness in Brisbane that weekend. Watch Rory receive the award here.

Another major highlight was when we attended the Moreton Bay Business & Innovation Awards Gala night on October 21. We were announced as the Award for Environment & Sustainability Excellence Winners! This award recognises a business in the Moreton Bay Region that has made a strong commitment to sustainable practices and environment improvement as part of their day-to-day business operations within the past 24 months.

Another highlight was hosting the final Moreton Bay Business Manufacturing Networking Event for 2022. Attendees included other local manufacturing businesses, Mayer Peter Flannery, other Council representatives, and representatives from Aspire.

November: National Recycling Week

We celebrated national recycling week, sharing some tips on the benefits of drainage concrete (one of our favourite recycled products!). And we were featured in an article by Sentinel News, recognising our win at the Business and Innovation Awards.

December: FestivitiesRory’s desk covered in Christmas wrapping and tinsel.

With the year quickly coming to a close, the team is already starting to get into the Christmas spirit! Office Manager, Hayden, sneakily Christmas wrapped Rory’s desk — and no doubt there’s more festive shenanigans still to come before we close up shop on December 23!

See You in 2023!

We would like to thank all of our staff, customers, and partners for supporting us throughout 2022. The team and I look forward to working with you again in the new year.

See you next year,

– Rory Crundall (and the rest of the team!)
